Escaping from Evening Television Watching Brings a Businessman Many Rewards
What do you do at the end of a long, trying work day? If you are like many people, watching television after dinner will be a way to relax and restore energy before another work day dawns.
Bill Kempen was having just such a peaceful evening of television watching when he suddenly realized that at 58 he was wasting his time with such viewing: He could surely be doing something more productive. What should he do instead?
In making that judgment to turn off his television set in the evenings, please realize that Bill Kempen was far from being a so-called couch potato. He co-headed a successful recruitment and human resources consulting firm. His physical fitness was so good that Bill was selected to represent South Africa in the World Power-Lifting Bench-Press competition at age 56. To help his community, he regularly spent his time helping the underprivileged in a variety of ways.
He wondered if he could use his evening hours in part-time studies for an MBA degree, a potential accomplishment that had long interested him. Attracted by an advertisement in the Economist for an online university, Bill joined the millions who are coming home from a full day of work to begin graduate studies.
What motivated him to take on this particularly time- and energy-consuming task? His job involved human resources consulting, a field in which academic credentials are helpful for attracting clients. MBA studies could also assist him to catch up with and make good use of the latest literature in his field.
He also hoped that MBA studies would enable him to be a more effective leader for his company while his firm helped clients to be more successful. Looking toward the near future, he hoped to retire in just a few years and to write a family history. Improving the company’s profits from MBA education would make retirement more certain and financially affordable.
In retirement, Bill hoped to spend more time with his family, help financially where necessary, arrange for family get-togethers on holidays, and spend more time with friends he had neglected during his busy consulting years. He hoped that profits would be good enough for him to sell his ownership in the consulting firm gradually and cut back on his consulting load. He planned to retire totally from consulting after receiving the final payment from selling his business. Perhaps writing a novel might be added to a long list of planned home improvement projects.
There’s no doubt that Bill loves education, both learning and teaching. Before becoming a consultant, he worked for many years as a teacher, studied at two training colleges and a university, and lectured at two business schools. During his time teaching working students, he noticed that deadlines were a major problem. When work demands rose, school work quality dropped well below a student’s potential.
He decided to avoid that problem in his own studies by finding a university where he would have no deadlines to meet, student-friendly modules of study, and profitable ways to apply the learning to his work.
While studying for his MBA, Bill took a wide range of courses designed to improve his personal effectiveness, knowledge of his field, and the productivity of his company. In each case, he did the work online under the supervision of an individual tutor who was a well-recognized business authority.
Two aspects of his university experiences particularly pleased him: Learning to write better and interaction with his course advisors.
He shared these observations about his course advisors:
“When a student sits in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the lecturers in America, maintaining contact with the student and personalizing the studies, is not easy. The advice given by the dean and his response to my letters or applications for course advisors left me with the impression that I was not just another number. The delightful sense of humor and the earnestness and professionalism with which the course advisors treated me, were extremely supportive. I sincerely appreciated the personal letters written by the course advisors giving advice on matters which arose within the assignments.”
Was it worth all of the effort? Bill seems to think so:
“To complete an MBA in the month that I turn sixty years old is a personal achievement of which I am quietly proud. The amount of knowledge and skills I have acquired through my studies and tutors has been extensive, exciting, and rewarding, BUT my company has been, and will be, the major benefactor. I have learned how to analyze and correct problems in our business, which I did not know how to do before I commenced these studies. The effect on our business is already visible in terms of improved morale and improved turnover.
“On a more personal basis there has been progress in a number of areas. I know I have sometimes not handled the stress well due to coping with long hours studying at home, a business that was losing turnover, poor cash flow, long hours at work too, and poor staff morale.
“In the end it has been worth it. The business has been turned round, and the habit of focusing on set objectives in business, family, social, intellectual and spiritual life, is paying dividends.
“Thank you, Rushmore University, for your help.”
Since graduating, Bill Kempen has been happy to complete his family’s history, Leaves of the Kempen Family Tree. Work is already being planned for a second edition that will feature his various ancestors’ roles in the Anglo-Boer War. Not letting any grass grow under his feet, he has already started researching drug addiction among young people as possible background for a novel.
It seems as though he never did get back to watching television in the evenings. And that’s just the way he likes it.

I want to get these degrees..is it too much? (MBA,CCNA,BTech-Telecom)?
Hi ,
I have a Diploma in high frequency electronics and also a Diploma in Sound Engineering(theory only, did it through distance learning). I am thinking of completing my Telecommunication B-Tech degree through a University in South Africa(where im originally from), that offers distance learning, it consists of 8 subjects and an industrial project. It would take about three years.
I recently decided that my career choice is to do something in IT, Networking Proffesional, as i see my telecommunication degree would supplement my IT career in Networking and both would intertwine.
I did the A+ and N+ courses online that I downloaded one day(didnt get the actual certifications.) and this is what I want to do.
Now, I also love reading and lately ive been reading ebooks like “MBA in a Day”, “MBA in finance” etc that I downloaded from the net.
Im very interested in finance and business too so Im thinking of taking an online MBA course while working on my Telecommunications Degree.
Also, in the networking field, ive read extensively on the CCNA, CCNP and CCIE courses. So…i want to start on my CC** courses too with Cisco. I read that industry ranks these individuals with these qualifications very high and are in demand. So in order to get good at my IT career in Networking, I want to start with the CCNA.
Now by doing this, obviously I will have alot of studying to do over a course of a couple of years, but obviously with the Bachelors degree and the CC** courses PLUS with the MBA, my knowledge in Networking would be sky high and I will also posess the Business know-how of the industry, finances etc.
Do you think this will be enough for my career and that I would be knowledgeable enough to do anything? I passed my Diploma subjects with very good grades and studying hard is something I love. I love to learn. Studying until 4 in the morning doesnt scare me, i love it.
***Please give me your opinions if you have knowledge of the MBA or CCNA courses or if you are in the industry. Please dont reply with SPAM links or irrelevant comments. ***

A Guide To South African Wine
South Africa is a relatively new player in the international wine world, but is increasingly producing better wine through the years. It is good at producing wine which represents good value for money whether it be a table wine or a fine wine that you are looking for.
South Africa is classed as ‘New World’ but the wine that it produces is far from that. In fact it seems to bridge the gap between ‘Old World’ and ‘New World’ styles making the product that it produces one of great interest to anyone who has a passing interest in wine. Add to this a selection of grape varieties that are not found in the other wine producing nations and you can benefit from a whole range of unique wine.
Red wine is something that South Africa seems to be attracting a lot of attention for – Pinotage is one such variety which produces a red wine that is earthy and has a savoury taste to it – a unique take on red wine.
The most well known regions for wine production in South Africa are: Stellenbosch; Constantia; Paarl; and Walker Bay
Stellenbosch is close to Cape Town and is in fact the country’s largest wine growing area. The vineyards are surrounded by mountains and the town is a university town. It is a very picturesque place – ideal in fact for wine touring. Within this area there are several different regions but in general the east is known for the red wine, whereas the sandstone areas in the west are responsible for the whites.
Constantia is a region which is tucked away in one of the Southern suburbs of Cape Town. This area was one of the first regions planted with grapes and hence has a pedigree for producing high quality wine.
Paarl is North West of Cape Town and is traditionally home to white wine production. However in recent years it has diversified into red wine territory. This has been due to the climate here which is similar to a Mediterranean climate and therefore well suited for growing all types of grape. The vines here are grown on slopes and the vineyards that produce the best wine are those situated further up the slope.
Walker Bay is a cool climate region and it therefore famous for producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. This region is the one to look out for especially as the wines that are currently coming out of here are somewhat unique in taste and could just be the next big thing
For a great range of South African wines, or just to browse wine in general, it is a good idea to consult an independent online wine retailer. You can browse wines in your chosen price range, and you can research before you buy.

Prodigy, 13, Claims Age Discrimination By Uconn
Even at 13, Colin Carlson believes he’s running out of time. Colin is a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, seeking a bachelor’s degree in ecology and evolutionary biology and another in environmental studies. But he’s been knocked off course by the university’s rejection of his request to take a class that includes summer field work in South Africa. He and his mother say university officials told them he is too young for the overseas course. So he’s filed an age discrimination claim with the university and U.S. Department of Education, which is investigating. “I’m losing time in my four-year plan for college,” he said. “They’re upsetting the framework of one of my majors.” Michael Kirk, a spokesman for UConn, would not comment on Colin’s case. But he said that generally, safety is the university’s first concern when travel is involved. The university would not let Colin enroll, even after his mother, Jessica Offir, offered to release UConn from liability and accompany her son as a chaperone at her own expense, she and Colin said. Colin was 2 or 3 when he began reading on his own, Offir said, and was up to “Harry Potter” by the time he was 4. An only child, he has faced trouble before because of his brainpower. His kindergarten teacher would not allow him to take books with him at nap time, and he was ridiculed by other children who fired math questions at him to entertain themselves, she said. “You have no idea what kids like this experience,” Offir said. Colin skipped two grades in public school and began taking psychology, history and other courses at UConn when he was 9. He graduated from Stanford University Online High School at age 11, and soon after enrolled full-time at UConn. “I’m actually like any other student, he said. “The faculty and students have better things to do than worry about a 13-year-old holding his own.” Over the years, Colin, who said he is fascinated by natural ecosystems, has traveled extensively. He has gone sea kayaking off Nova Scotia and Ecuador, hiked in numerous national parks and, with his mother, has traveled across the U.S. by car. “It’s important to have a very wide world view,” he said. “Biology is fundamentally about the diversity of life, with a focus across the planet.” Colin says the course in conservation work in South Africa would have been critical to his studies and the rejection has forced him to change his thesis plans. He said that once he’s completed his undergraduate studies, he wants a Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology and a degree in environmental law for a career in conservation science. He intends to earn the two degrees by age 22. Carl Schlichting, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology who has taught Colin in two courses, said he is not only an outstanding student, but is unusually certain for a 13-year-old about where he is headed professionally. “He has very strong ideas about what he wants to do,” he said. “His self-confidence is very high. It’s a very unusual package to see the intellect and confidence at that age.” To be eligible to study abroad, students may not be on university nike shox probation or academic probation and must have earned a grade point average of at least a “C” — no problem for Colin, who’s an honor student with a near-perfect 3.9 GPA. The study abroad office and faculty member leading the trip ultimately decide who may go, Kirk said. Brian Whalen, president and chief executive officer of the Forum on Education Abroad, a nonprofit member association of 400 schools, agencies and other groups, said he has not heard of another case where a college student Colin’s age had tried to study abroad. When accepted into a college or university, a student generally is assumed to have access to academic programs, he said. Although Colin was barred from the South African field trip course, he will participate in a National Science Foundation-funded research group that also will take him to South Africa to study plant ecology. Colin and his mother say they would be satisfied if the university ensures that the NSF-funded research trip and a seminar fulfill the academic requirements of the course he originally sought. They also have asked that $5,000 in stipend and expenses be reimbursed. Their lawyer, Michael Agranoff, said he wants to negotiate a solution. He and a lawyer for the state have scheduled their first meeting Friday, he said. Colin says he would prefer not to have to fight, but he has no choice. “When people are drawing lines in the sand, you’re going to have to cross them,” he said. “I’m not going back.”

Watch Closely at Universities Somewhere in Leeds ? Mistaken Identity!
Having been through some hardships with online false promises or identity, I thought it would shed some light to openly write on the possibility of mistaking credibility of one university over the other. You surely would feel scammed if you enrolled in a university that is not what you thought it is. It’s possible, read on to learn more or if you are in a hurry, link here for detailed analysis of this matter.
This arises from the world over long time credibility for the University of Leeds that can easily be given to the Leeds Metropolitan University. Of particular interest is the course that the Leeds Metropolitan University has extended to 28 countries in Africa, which the clearly state in their website. This course came as a good substitute for a three year programme that is offered in South Africa. Target professionals include executive directors, senior managers, permanent secretaries, municipality executives, etc.
This programme can be lucrative in that it takes far less time to complete than the one offered in South Africa. Instead of three years on part time studies in South Africa, you only take one year and still on part time basis. So who wouldn’t like a short cut as it cuts down a lot on time and still suit the working class as it is also on part time basis.
I have details my perception on this particular course that has somewhat taken Swaziland (and possibly the other 27 African countries) by storm. First the course is not offered by the University of Leeds but by the Leeds Metropolitan University in conjunction with a local centre, Mananga. To many, the perception is that the course is offered by the University of Leeds. I have seen and heard several people who are prospects to the course get so much exited and even take pride in the course because it is assumed to be offered by the University of Leeds.
I take pleasure to welcome you to my post at yeboyesafrica.com where I detail the reasons why I took interest in this matter as it counts for prospective students not only in the short run, but throughout their career lifetime.

Celebrate with Flowers
Times of celebration call for a special token of congratulations. Think of the many occasions for congratulations that exist in day-to-day life, when gifts are given in celebration of the event. A flower arrangement is a perfect gift of congratulations, as it adds a personal touch to the gesture. Instead of presenting yet another bottle of champagne or box of chocolates, congratulation flowers are a unique and vibrant choice of gift.
Celebrate with flowers!
The world is such a busy and active place that there are opportunities for celebrating personal growth everywhere. Some common celebrations are family and friend-related, such as birthdays, anniversaries and the birth of a child. Other celebrations involve employment and academic achievements.
Whatever the occasion for celebration, flowers make a fantastic gift. Order celebratory flowers from online florists now, and choose from the vast selection of fresh cut flowers in South Africa.
When should I send celebration flowers and gifts?
Types of congratulations flowers differ according to what is being celebrated, and the preferences of the person you’re sending the flowers to.
Birthdays are generally a time for sending bold and brightly coloured flowers, as are anniversaries – unless it is a milestone anniversary such as 25 years. In this case, a more formal and luxurious bouquet is appropriate, perhaps with a specific colour scheme to suit the occasion. To celebrate a birth, pink flowers are an obvious choice for a girl, and orange or yellow flowers for a boy. Gerberas are vibrant and bold flowers, perfectly suited to a happy occasion like a birthday, anniversary or birth.
A new job, promotion, acceptance to or graduation from university usually involves not only family and friends but employers, employees and associates too. These occasions are also great opportunities to celebrate with flowers. Celebration flowers for a new job, promotion or university achievement should be bright and emotive flowers. Large and deeply-coloured roses or striking white lilies are popular choices on these occasions. For a more formal gesture, a colour scheme of selected blooms is always effective.

Families and friends are often separated by long distances, and aren’t always together at a time of celebration. This is when online florists are an ideal solution.
Online florists have extensive catalogues featuring both fresh cut flowers and other gifts and hampers, including sweets, snacks and champagne. When celebrating with flowers, why not add a card or a small gift, such as chocolates, to the bouquet? Doing Business in South Africa as a Webmaster
When you come to South Africa or want to do business, you must come with an open mind. South Africa runs one of the world’s leading economies today. That is why I target South African as much as other webmasters do for a rewarding internet business.
I have heard the news and bares testimony to that if you have been to South Africa, then you have been to the United States of America. I believe it is true? I may not be sure on other aspects but if I may ask, ‘what is it that you can get in the US and don’t get is South Africa?’ There is absolutely few if any. The medical systems, practitioners and equipment match the global standard. I’m told some patients from abroad (USA inclusive) come for their medical needs in South Africa. Universities in South Africa have global appeal and meet high standards of certification. Thus serving the whole world with classic education.
Can you believe it? I just said South Africa is my target. Yes, I said it because I’m one webmaster who shall never relent until I get a share of the South African traffic. Why South Africa? There are some goodies right here in South Africa, limited to other neighboring countries like Swaziland, Malawi, Zambia, Lesotho and Zimbabwe. I hope and believe that these goodies shall not soon evaporate with the prevailing political unrest.
Coming right to the point, webmasters stand to benefit a lot from participating in South African online markets. There are several of them that I outline in my website under the ‘Online Goodies’ category. Like I often say in many of my articles, there is no reason to try and keep some good money making idea to yourself hoping no one will know unless they hear from you, it just wont work. I therefore have volumes and volumes of good content to help you earn some serious cash as a webmaster fishing for the South African traffic. Think of the thousands of internet cafes in South Africa, the home connections and the private offices that is all grounds for the hungry webmaster. The sky is truly the limit when it comes to getting a share of the South African traffic.
How about crime? This is one of the worst heard of experiences in South Africa. Crime that has never been heard of anywhere in the world can be seen and recorded for South Africa. Its amazing how white collar crime has invaded the country even to the point of senior political positions. The crime rate is unfortunately one critical aspect that can contribute to economy drains for an extended period of time. Think of the court cases arising from white collar crime that takes years to be resolved yet they need external interventions.
With no exception, the good news is that in South Africa, the good far outweighs the bad. That’s certainly why the world thought it right to host the world cup right in South Africa. And with the invention of the internet, eliminating the need of physical contacts in business transactions, the webmaster is ahead of the many offline traps.
