All About Powerball

Powerball is the oldest multi state lottery is the US. Powerball was formerly known as Lotto America and was started in 1988. The game and the name was changed to Powerball in 1992. Powerball drawings are held at Universal Studios in Orlando Florida on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 PM EST. Powerball lottery tickets are only $1 and players select five numbers from 1 through 59 and one Powerball number from 1 through 39. Players can select their own numbers or can use the ‘quick pick’ option available at all lottery retailers. Powerball players do not have to match the winning numbers in the exact order they are drawn. For another dollar players can activate the ‘Power Play’ option which can multiply non jackpot winnings by 2 or 5.

In October of 2009 the Multi State Lottery Association, which operates Powerball, and the Mega Millions consortium reached an agreement allowing the cross sales of tickets for both lotteries in most jurisdictions. Previously states could either sell Powerball or Mega Millions but not both. The move has been popular with lottery players and ticket sales have increased for both lotteries. Powerball holds the record for the largest jackpot won by a single lottery ticket. In 2007 seven workers at a Nebraska Con Agra plant won a record $365 million dollar Powerball jackpot. Previously West Virginia resident Jack Whittaker won a $315 million Powerball jackpot which is one of the largest jackpots won by a single ticketholder.

Powerball has provided many colorful wins. In 2009 a down on his luck South Dakota cowboy won a $232 million Powerball jackpot. Neal Wanless was just about to lose his trailer home and couldn’t pay back taxes of $3,552 owed on the family ranch. Wanless said he plans to share his good fortune with other community members. The family had been selling scrap metal to get by. On April 23rd, 2010 a Missouri convenience store clerk who was down to his last $30 dollars won a whopping $258 million Powerball jackpot. Chris Shaw, who was working for minimum wage and was struggling with basic living expenses, will no longer have to worry about bills.

Powerball odds are long and players have about a 1 in 195,249,054.00 chance of matching all five numbers plus the Powerball. Players who match all five numbers without the Powerball can win $200,000. Players who match four numbers plus the Powerball win $10,000. Powerball winners have the option to take their winnings in cash or as an annuity paid in 30 installments over the course of 29 years. Powerball winners have 90 days to one year to claim winnings depending on the rules in the jurisdiction where the ticket was purchased.

Powerball is going strong in the 21st century. Hopefully in the near future Powerball and other lotteries will adopt 21st century technology and offer the sale of online lottery tickets!

5 things you need to know about criminal justice school accreditation

When deciding which criminal justice program to attend, the accreditation issue is very important. There are certain things that you should know about accreditation.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation means that a school and its programs have been peer reviewed through site visits by bodies recognized and authorized by the US Department of Education to do so. It, therefore, ultimately means that degrees obtained from accredited schools are recognized across the nation and are accepted as valid by employers.

Who are the recognized accreditation bodies?

The US Department of Education funds eight accreditation bodies. There are six regional accreditation (RA) bodies and two spin-offs of two of the six RA bodies.
These bodies are authorized to grant accreditations to schools falling within their specified regional jurisdictions.

These bodies are:

• the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont);

• the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia);

• the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Panama);

• the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming);

• the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (California, Hawaii, the territories of Guam, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, the Pacific Basin, and East Asia); and,

• the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington).

The two spin-offs are:

• the Western Association’s Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities (see WICHE Best Practices), and,

• the North Central’s Higher Learning Commission (see NCA Best Practices).

If your school is accredited by one of these eight (8) groups, which receive U.S. Dept. of Education funding and operate primarily by site visit-peer review, then you need not worry — your school has the best accreditation there is.

Are there other accreditation bodies?

There are other accreditation bodies and many online schools proudly advertise that they are accredited by one or the other of these bodies. But these so-called accrediting bodies are themselves not accredited so that their accreditations are not worth the paper they are written on.

Out of all these other accrediting bodies there are some that are simply blacklisted and not recognized while there are others that may be accepted as valid in 30 per cent of the organizations that matter. Employers, on the other hand, are likely to reject outright degrees given by schools accredited by these other agencies.

Is there a list of blacklisted schools or a list of schools whose degrees are not recognized?

Yes, at present there are two such lists. One list has been prepared by the state of Michigan and another prepared by the state of Oregon. Employers use these lists to check whether a particular degree from a particular school is worthless or not.

Is accreditation a really important issue?

Yes! It is the most important issue when you are deciding which criminal justice school you should enroll in. If the school you enroll in is not accredited, then the degree that you earn after spending a lot of money and effort will not be worth the paper it is written on. You will be a sucker of the worst kind!

It?s All About Gambling

Despite years of social and religious condemnation and government legislation on gambling, it has proliferated in mushroom proportion. It has been believed to be an inherent part of man’s psyche, being always on a gamble for its survival, particularly dating back to the primitive days when man hunts for food to feed himself and his family.

The dice has been thrown for games eons before and has changed with the times; bettors and gamblers now rely on supernatural powers and gambles on games of chance. A very good epitome of this type of gambler is Ashley Revel, who sold all his possessions, clothing included, amounting to US$135,300 and bet it on a roulette table. He went out of Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas with double the amount of his original bet.

Indeed, gambling has catapulted its rank from a mere pastime to being not only a universal but also transcultural phenomenon, with varying nuances for every culture it thrives on.

In the boiling-point controversy about whether gambling is legal or not, it should be understood that no existing law prohibits online gambling or deems it illegal. Rules for online gambling may also vary in every state. In Massachusetts, Utah, California, and South Dakota, some areas are found to have prohibited gambling while other areas not. On the other hand, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, and Michigan have prohibited gambling.

To squelch claims that there are no national laws in the US that prohibit gambling, the Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 was presented by a republican congressman, stressing on moral issues for online gambling. Currently, there are changes in betting online as an effect of this law among other factors that arose, but still no law can be adhered to in prohibiting it; and it has been proven difficult to implement one.

Moreover, gambling has gained perennial status in every country, culture, and economy; and whoever or whatever restricts it has to come a long way from analyzing man’s psychological makeup.
