Students at Kansas State University are looking forward to a deeper understanding of India and experiencing its culture, say two leaders who are working to give students more opportunities to learn about and experience South Asia.
Barry Michie, director of international program support at K-State and Bradley Shaw, co-principal investigator, have said that the fascination for India has gone through a change in recent times.
“For instance, in the 1960s and ’70s, most people’s idea of India centered on sacred cows, Ravi Shankar, spirituality and bullock carts. But I think we’ve gone way beyond that point with students’ perceptions of South Asia today as a region of growing economic and political importance to the U.S. and their own lives,” said Michie.
The university has received a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to enhance K-State offerings in South Asian studies.
The Title VI grant under the Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program will help K-State develop a proposed interdisciplinary secondary major in South Asian studies and will expand faculty and student opportunities in South Asia across all colleges.
A four-semester sequence of Hindi language classes is included in the project.
Michie said they hope to have the secondary major approved by the university and the Kansas Board of Regents by the end of the 2010-2011 academic years.
The researchers have said that it is more than just India’s growing importance in world politics and economics that makes South Asian studies a priority at K-State.
“Students today see it in their own self interest to know more about the world and to add some kind of international dimension to their study, whether it’s generalized international study or a more specific region of the world. They see possible professional opportunities for themselves — whether they choose engineering, a humanities discipline, journalism or any another field — and they want to have a competitive edge,” said Shaw.
The planned secondary major would not only add Hindi language classes, but it is also designed to create 14 new or revised courses with a focus on South Asia and adds experiential programs in India like study abroad programs, joint projects, internships and volunteer opportunities for undergraduate students.
K-State faculty across all disciplines will have opportunities to revise their courses, travel in India and create relationships for study or research.
“These faculty opportunities fan out to have the effect of reaching many undergraduate students,” said Shaw.
“We hope to tap into a heritage market of students whose parents are from India but who themselves have been born and raised in the United States,” said Michie. (ANI)

It’s not often that we recommend a visit to a sewage disposal center, but that’s the main function of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the most innovative wastewater treatment facilities in the world. This marsh, or wetland system, is known in the scientific community around the world, and has won many awards, including the Innovations in Government award from the Ford Foundation/Harvard University Kennedy School.
The Arcata Marsh is popular among cyclists, joggers, trail walkers, students of the facility, tourists, and birdwatchers. Visited by over 250 species of birds a year, many of which are migratory, the marsh hosts bird watching tours very Saturday morning.
Arcata City Council meetings, City Hall, 736 F Street
In 1996, Arcata became the first city in the U.S. to elect a Green Party majority. In 2007, the “Greens” regained a majority on the city council.
Even without Republican and Libertarian participation, the Arcata City Council meetings are often lively, and sometimes fun. And there’s plenty of input from the audience.

Arcata Community Forest is one of the few municipally owned forests in the nation. It was certified as sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in 1998 and is a model for sustained yield forestry.
Arcata operates its forest by selective cutting (not clear cutting), which aims to preserve the natural setting. However, the logging of any redwood trees remains controversial in Arcata. (Residents of Arcata have played a major part in saving the Headwaters Forest from logging.)
The Community Forest serves as a wildlife habitat, as a source of education in sustainable timber harvesting, and, with many hikers and mountain bikers on its trails, as an all-season, outdoor fitness center.

Our favorite local publication is the weekly Arcata Eye–a quintessential small-town muckraking newspaper. Buy The Eye, rather than accessing it online, to get a list of events, from bird watching expeditions to live music performances. Humboldt County residents love their oldest continuously operating semi-pro baseball team in the country, and games are frequently sold out. The atmosphere is typical Americana with its fevered enthusiasm–but also tobacco-free!

Humboldt County claims more artists per capita than anywhere else in California. The second Friday of each month, fine arts and live music can be enjoyed at more than 40 locations around town. But no matter when you are there, there are always live bands playing, dances, and art shows.

I am pursuing my BA in Psychology and Behavioral Analysis in Kaplan University. It is left for me 0,5 year to get my BA. However, I have found out that Kaplan University is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), also known as North Central, is one of six regional accreditation organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. In today’s world, the number of graduates who are earning online degrees is skyrocketing. However, there are many concerns related to online degrees.
One main concern is whether the online university is actually certified, authorized, and/or accredited to award degrees to students. Some schools do not meet these requirements. There are also several levels of fraud found in some educational programs and “schools.” These can range from using the student’s work history as the “learning” period that earned the degree to simply selling diplomas. Degrees-R-Us is one such example, promising bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees in about 10 days, and are willing to show one graduated with honors for a higher “tuition fee.”
Some states like Oregon, Iowa, and South Dakota are starting to crack down on these types of schools within their borders.
To protect yourself, you should check to see what kind of accreditation the school you are considering enrolling in has, or claims to have. Being “licensed by the state” isn’t an accreditation and may not mean anything at all. Some violators claim to be accredited by agencies that either don’t exist, have been created by the school itself, or are legitimate agencies, but have no record of accreditation for the school. Those who have earned degrees from these unaccredited schools are really out-of-luck when it comes to their hard-earned dollars and time because potential employers likely will reject these job applicants and the credits earned from these unaccredited schools cannot be transferred to other universities. In essence, those students have to start all over once again.
Therefore, you should contact the appropriate State Department of Higher Education to see if these schools are accredited or not. If you want to remain on the safe side, take online courses only from schools that have an offline campus presence, as that school’s reputation will be at stake, so the quality of the online program should match the offline program. However, there are strictly online campuses that are accredited and provide a quality education as well, like the University of Phoenix.
Another main concern with online degrees is what type of accreditation is best. The two main types of accreditation are regional accreditation and national accreditation.
While transfer credits from schools that are regionally accredited are generally accepted at both regionally and nationally accredited universities, the same is NOT true for transfer credits that are earned at nationally accredited universities – regionally accredited universities will normally not accept them, meaning you have to earn those course credits again if you decide to continue your pursuit of a bachelor’s degree at a later date at a regionally accredited school after starting your bachelor’s degree at a national accredited school.
Also, while some employers don’t understand the difference between the two types of accreditation, some employers prefer prospective applicants to have earned a degree from a locally recognized university, rather than one in another part of the country. Therefore, if you plan on working in a certain part of the country, it may be advantageous to check out those universities near that area and enrol for their online courses as this could give you an edge in future job interviews.
